This is purported to be the oldest gay bar in the country (and, indirectly, Clover Grill, directly across from it, serves a delicious late night meal). If you keep walking down Bourbon, you'll find Cafe Lafitte in Exile at the next street corner. With your back to the rest of Bourbon, Bourbon Pub is to your left and Oz (more of a club scene) is to your right. This is the nexus of the downtown gay scene. Gay bar/clubwise, just walk to the intersection of Bourbon Street and St. Below are some great recommendations from Thrillist. So many things to do! The list can go on & on. Lucy's Retired Surfer Bar īutcher (secondary restaurant to Cochon) Ĭounter (secondary restaurant to Kingfish) Definitely take advantage of that, but also be sure to get out of the French Quarter. Check it out on Sunday for their bottomless mimosa brunch.Īlso, this weekend is French Quarter Festival. No one mentioned The Country Club yet?! It's a clothing-optional, gay-friendly country club in the Bywater. Rawhide is a leather bar that was upsetting enough to traumatize my ex boyfriend. it's in the quarter and skeezy old men watch 15 year old junky guys dance around in their boxers. If you really want to see the worst of the city i'd reccomend The Corner Pocket. city park is massive, and has the art museum in it, and a sculpture garden. go early, or you may have to wait a whileĬity park and audubon park are cool. it's a spanish restaurant and their paella is amazing. i highly recommend the jama-jama.Īlso, Lola's is super good. If you're in the mood for some non creole or cajun food i'd suggest Bennachin, which is in the quarter. my favorites were Jim Russell's and The Mushroom. There are some really great record stores there. and the garden district has the cemetery that you are probably least likely to get stabbed in.

the farther up you go the fancier the stores get, until it becomes weird designer stores where you have to ring a doorbell to get in or get turned away like pretty woman.

is a seemingly endless series of a couple blocks of houses, then a strip of cool stores. especially the areas in the lower garden district and the irish channel. the marigny and the bywater neighborhoods are worth checking out. I haven't lived there since hurricane katrina, but just make sure you see more than the french quarter. Posts that violate these rules but are interesting (a personal vlog from a Tuareg couple, a selfie taken with the Queen, etc.) are encouraged, but subject to removal at discretion.

Peruse the work of local artists at the outdoor artist colony or grab a meal at one of the many restaurants. But the square is not just of historic interest. Stop by the Cabildo Museum, the original Spanish city hall, which now houses the Louisiana State Museum. Louis Cathedral and the Upper Pontalba Building, a four-story brick Victorian with lacy balconies, considered the first apartment building in the United States. Located in the center of the French Quarter, Jackson Square is ringed with historic buildings, including the beautiful St. When night falls, live music, as well as raucous crowds, spill onto the streets. The area is a wonderful place to wander during the day, checking out the beautiful 19th-century buildings. As the French Quarter’s main drag, Bourbon Street buzzes with legendary restaurants serving authentic Creole cuisine, famous jazz clubs where the greats have all have played, and packed bars, including America’s first gay bar.
